You may remember John Goodman from the hit television sitcom Roseanne, playing the family patriarch Dan Conner, or perhaps from the 1998 cult classic, The Big Lebowski, but the actor has caught people’s attention lately for something else: his jaw-dropping weight loss. In 2007, John quit drinking alcohol, which he said helped him get on a path to health. He later told The Guardian in 2012, “It was getting to be too much. It was 30 years of a disease that was taking its toll on everyone around me and it was becoming more and more debilitating. It was time to stop.”
Then in 2017, the then 65-year-old showed off his reported 100 pound drop and opened up about his decision to get healthy: “I was pushing 400 pounds…somewhere up around there,” the 6’2″ actor confessed to David Letterman. “I’m never not going to look like Paris Hilton or anything like that. It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.”
How John Goodman lost the weight
Before finally getting in shape for good, John had tried to lose the weight time and time again, but didn’t succeed. However, this time around, he was taking it seriously. “It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next,” he told People. “This time I wanted to [lose weight] slowly, move, exercise. I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still.”
Since making this commitment to living life better, Goodman has lost a total of more than 200 pounds. Walking the red carpet at the 2023 Monte Carlo Television Festival held in Monaco on June 18, Goodman was almost unrecognizable in his super-svelte physique.
According to Men’s Health, Goodman’s personal trainer Mackie Shilstone, who has played an integral role in helping Goodman transform his body, describes Goodman’s diet as being along the lines of a Mediterranean eating plan.

Goodman shares his exercise secret: Fun
Goodman also committed to working out on the treadmill or elliptical machine six days a week to make sure he got a minimum of 10,000 steps each day. He also incorporate fun into his daily exercise routine to help him stick with it.
“I was boxing up until the pandemic hit,” said Goodman to Rolling Stone. “I haven’t been able to do that since COVID because I’m lazy.” But he started a routine again this summer where “I get some stuff done.” He also admitted that he’s grown to enjoy boxing as another pastime, not just for exercise. “It’s just hitting the mitts and trying to learn. I never got good enough where I would trust myself to spar because once I get whacked in the face, I don’t know if I wouldn’t lose it. But I would eventually like to grow more advanced at the sport. It’s usually just an hour, hour and a half of hitting the mitts, hitting the bags, learning footwork. It’s great.”
