If the flat screen TV is a bit old and the sofa needs to be replaced, there is always another option to spruce up your living room - a
30,000 gallon swimming pool.

A luxurious apartment has gone on sale complete with a 30ft long swimming pool in the space where the lounge should be.

Guests can get a drink at the bar, float around on an inflatable raft or jump off a swing attached to the ceiling without even going out the front door.

Its owner says that having such an amenity in her own home leaves her feeling like she is on ‘permanent holiday’.

The pool is part of a $10.9million townhouse that has been put up for sale in the Chelsea area of New York.

In total it has six bedrooms, a garden, a gym, a sauna, five bathrooms, five fireplaces and a second pool - for the owner's turtles.

According to the Wall St Journal the pool was installed in 1975 and was surrounded by a brick wall and granite flooring to make sure it was ‘grandfathered in’.

Evelyn McMurray Van-Zeller, who currently lives at the house, said that she later installed medieval weapons, artworks and antiques around it to give it a ‘cave-like, medieval, Moroccan look’.

But doing so was not easy and she had to get a 25-foot ladder and put it over the pool and a raft.

‘Improvisation is very important when you have a house like this. The good news is that if you fall off, you fall into the pool.’

Mrs McMurray Van-Zeller said she and her animals enjoy having a pool in the house, and her turtles and Yorkshire terrier sometimes go for a swim.

‘You feel like you're on a permanent holiday,’ she said. ‘There's almost no reason to leave the house [with] the pool, the sauna [and] the gym.’

Mrs McMurray Van-Zeller was living in Europe when she inherited the property from her brother in 1995 and has lived there with her husband João Van-Zeller ever since.

She now wants to move back home and get a smaller place in Manhattan for when she returns to New York.

The buyer, according to her, could be ‘a celebrity or someone who wants a trophy property or bragging rights.

‘Who doesn't want to say they have a swimming pool in their living room?’ she said.

Whilst having a swimming pool in your living room is impressive, it is not the most ostentatious property recently put up for sale.
